Ripples Part III

What does talking about values mean? What does it mean to work to discover on which values our existences are based? Someone might wrinkle their nose and think that we need to be practical; for some, it might be difficult to understand how daily actions can indicate their values. Here are some practical examples, from the principle to the action to the value we uphold and guide us.

I hope these examples can be helpful in your research.

The first principle is that of "interpretive charity." A few days ago, I read an article published by the authors of Tlon, and it was love at first sight: one of the most challenging things I learned during the counseling course, for me and all the other participants, was listening to the other person. Deep, authentic listening. Often, we listen to "respond": that is, we grasp the general concept of the person's speech in front of us, but we are already thinking about how to counter it. Or we listen and, especially when the other person's point of view diverges from ours, we judge, label, and pigeonhole. What if we tried to suspend judgment?

Did you know about this principle?
